Talk with your doctor if you suspect your meds are affecting your sex life.

If your sex life isn't what you think it should be — or what it used to be — talk with your physician or health care provider, even if initiating the discussion feels a little awkward or embarrassing. (If all those television ads can bring such subjects into your living room, surely you can bring them up in your doctor's office.) At the very least, it's helpful to rule out drugs as a cause of sexual problems before you undergo diagnostic tests that could lead to additional prescriptions.

Here's a rundown of the major classes of drugs that can interfere with your sex life. As always, it's important to remember that you should not discontinue drugs without consulting your doctor.

1. Statins and fibrates

Why they're prescribed: Statins and fibrates are used to treat high cholesterol.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: Researchers say that by limiting the availability of cholesterol, a building block of hormones, these drugs likely interfere with the production of testosterone, estrogen and other sex hormones.  Additionally, statins can cause rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of muscle tissue, leading to joint pain and fatigue.

A review of studies of statins and fibrates, published in 2002, concluded that both classes of drugs may cause erectile dysfunction (ED). And a six-month, government-funded study published in 2009 found that men and women taking statins reported increased difficulty achieving orgasm. In the study, people's levels of sexual pleasure dropped along with their levels of LDL cholesterol.

Options: If you're among the many millions of older Americans without known coronary disease who are taking these drugs, ask your doctor or other health care provider about treating your slightly elevated cholesterol with a combination of sublingual (under-the-tongue) vitamin B12 (1000mcg daily), folic acid (800mcg daily) and vitamin B6 (200mg daily).

2. Blood pressure medications

Why they're prescribed: All blood pressure medications — and there are eight different categories of them — are used to lower the pressure inside blood vessels, so the heart doesn't have to work as hard to pump blood throughout the body.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: While high blood pressure in itself can lead to sexual dysfunction, studies show that many of the drugs used to treat this condition also can cause sexual difficulties. In men, the decreased blood flow can reduce desire and interfere with erections and ejaculation. In women, it can lead to vaginal dryness, a decrease in desire, and difficulties achieving orgasm.

Three types of blood-pressure medications — diuretics (or "water pills"), beta-blockers and alpha-blockers — have been found to have the highest incidence of sexual side effects. Some diuretics, for example, not only interfere with blood flow to the sex organs but increase the body's excretion of zinc, which is needed to produce testosterone. And beta-blockers can sabotage a satisfying sex life at least three ways — by making you feel sedated and depressed, by interfering with nerve impulses associated with arousal and by reducing testosterone levels.

Options: Talk with your doctor or other health care provider about switching to another type of blood pressure medication. For older patients, a benzothiazepine calcium channel blocker is often the best choice, and drugs in this class have been shown to cause fewer adverse sexual effects than other antihypertensives.

3. Antidepressants

Why they're prescribed: While antidepressants are typically used to treat depression, they're also frequently prescribed for anxiety disorders, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic pain, smoking cessation and some hormone-mediated disorders, such as severe menstrual cramps.

There are many different kinds of antidepressants, including tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), dopamine antagonists and lithium, among others.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: Antidepressants cause problems in all areas of sexual function, probably by blocking the action of three brain chemicals that relay signals between nerve cells: acetylcholine, serotonin and norepinephrine.

The adverse effects of clomipramine (Anafranil), for instance, include ejaculation failure (reported by more than 40 percent of men taking the drug), impotence (reported by at least 15 percent of patients) and decreased libido (reported by at least 18 percent of patients).

Options: Talk with your doctor or other health care provider about lowering your dose (sexual side effects are often dose-related) or whether nondrug therapies might work just as well or better for you than a drug. You might also want to explore switching drugs, especially if you're older and taking one of the tricyclic antidepressants, which are considered to be potentially inappropriate drugs for older people.

4. Antipsychotics

Why they're prescribed: Antipsychotics are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other serious psychiatric conditions. Antipsychotics also are often prescribed "off-label" to treat agitation and depression, among other conditions.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: All antipsychotic drugs block dopamine, a brain chemical that helps regulate emotional responses and control the brain's reward and pleasure centers. They also increase levels of the hormone prolactin, which can lead to ED, reduced libido and difficulties achieving orgasm. And, like antidepressants, they block the action of acetylcholine, which researchers believe can lead to problems in all areas of sexual function.

The sexual side effects of these drugs have been difficult to tease out because many of the psychiatric conditions the drugs are used to treat are themselves associated with sexual problems. Nonetheless, the incidence of sexual dysfunction associated with antipsychotic drugs ranges in different studies from 45 percent to as high as 90 percent.

Options: Talk with your doctor or other health care provider about the possibility of reducing dosage or switching to another antipsychotic drug. If you or a loved one has been prescribed one of these drugs for Alzheimer's-related depression or agitation, talk to the doctor immediately. Antipsychotics pose heightened death risks for older people with dementia.

5. Benzodiazepines

Why they're prescribed: Benzodiazepines, commonly known as tranquilizers, are used to treat anxiety, insomnia, agitation and muscle spasms, and to prevent seizures.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: The sedative and muscle-relaxant properties of benzodiazepines are thought to lessen sexual interest, excitement and sensation. Benzodiazepines may also interfere with the production of testosterone, a hormone important for sexual desire in women as well as men.

The sexual problems most frequently associated with benzodiazepines are diminished orgasms, pain during intercourse, ED and ejaculation problems.

Options: Many patients with mild anxiety or insomnia don't need benzodiazepines at all. And for all the conditions listed above, there are alternative drug and nondrug treatments. Melatonin, in doses from 3 milligrams to 10 milligrams before bedtime, for instance, sometimes helps to reestablish healthy sleep patterns. Elderly people should never use diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or any sleep aid with a name ending in "PM." Talk with your doctor or other health care provider.

6. H2 blockers

Why they're prescribed: H2 blockers, also called H2-receptor antagonists, are used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric ulcers, peptic ulcers and erosive esophagitis.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: H2 blockers can cause impotence (as well as breast enlargement in men) when taken at high doses for a long period of time.

Cimetidine (Tagamet) is associated with a wider range of sex-related side effects than other H2 blockers, including ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid) and nizatidine (Axid). Cimetidine's side effects include decreased libido, reduced sperm count and ED.

Options: If you are taking an H2 blocker for GERD or other reflux problems — and H2 blockers, with the exception of cimetidine, are the treatment of choice for older people — changes in your diet and sleep habits may be helpful. Some of my patients have reported success with the home remedy of apple cider vinegar and honey (one tablespoon of each in a glass of water), taken throughout the day, along with melatonin at bedtime.

7. Anticonvulsants

Why they're prescribed: Anticonvulsant drugs are typically used to control seizures in people who have epilepsy. They are also used to treat some types of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain and migraines, even though they weren't designed for that purpose. Anticonvulsants are also increasingly being used "off label" in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

How they can cause sexual dysfunction: Studies have shown that these drugs can lower testosterone levels, which can depress desire and interfere with arousal (erection problems for men, lubrication problems for women). They also can impair the ability to have orgasms.

Options: Some newer anticonvulsants like gabapentin (Neurontin) and topiramate (Topamax) may have fewer side effects than older drugs like carbamazepine (Tegretol) and phenytoin (Dilantin), so ask your doctor or other health care provider if switching medications makes sense for you — and your sex life.

A low-carb or carb-free diet can help steer you away from sugary and starchy foods like bread, pasta, and cereal. Low-carb diets are high in protein and fats and can offer an alternative to counting calories or grams. The diet isn't for everyone, however; people with medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, as well as pregnant and nursing women, should consult with their general practitioner before making significant dietary changes. Even when a lot of treats are off the table, there are still some great options for people given the go-ahead to adopt a low-carb diet.

Eggs

Eggs are an excellent low-carb food. They contain almost zero carbohydrates, but provide plenty of nutrients including vitamins A, D, E, and B, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium. Egg yolks contain choline, which is essential for brain development, nerve function, muscle movement, and energy. Eggs are one of the most affordable sources of quality protein.

Fish

Seafood, including salmon, tuna, mackerel, haddock, trout, sardines, and anchovies, are free of carbohydrates. Fish is rich in fats and protein. Fatty fish, including salmon, char, mackerel, and sardines, are some of the best for your health because they contain omega-3 fatty acids that fight inflammation and lower the risk of developing conditions such as autoimmune diseases, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. These nutrients are particularly vital during pregnancy; the fetal brain requires them for healthy development.

Red meat

Red meat, including beef, lamb, pork, and veal, is also carb-free, excepting organ meats like liver. Beef is full of iron and vitamin B12, which helps make DNA and keeps nerves and red blood cells healthy. Depending on the cut, meat may be more or less fatty. This makes it possible to choose your dinner options based on the ratio of fat to protein you need that day.

Poultry

Chicken, turkey, and duck are quality protein sources that contain zero carbohydrates. If you're looking for lean protein, chicken breast contains 80% protein and 20% fat. Some people on low-carb diets prefer to stick to fattier cuts such as the thigh, leg, and wing, however. Chicken provides plenty of essential vitamins and minerals and is low in cholesterol and sodium when the right portion size is properly prepared.

Cheese

Hard cheeses like Muenster, Gouda, cheddar, Colby-Jack, and Swiss are generally no more than one or two percent carbohydrate. Cheese is high in fat and a great source of protein as well. It also boasts ample quantities of vitamin B12 and calcium. Cheese comes in many flavors and textures, making it a versatile food.

Greek Yogurt

While not completely carb-free, Greek yogurt is a low-carb option, usually made up of about 12 grams per cup, and has around 40% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of protein. It is also a great source of calcium and phosphorus. One of the most beneficial things about yogurt is its probiotic content. Probiotics are good bacteria essential to gut health. They boost immune system function, aid in nutrient absorption, and fight off bad bacteria.

Butter

Butter is approximately 80% fat and 20% water. It does not contain any carbohydrates or proteins. It is, however, a great source of vitamins A, D, and E. Butter is also rich in healthy saturated fats that raise good HDL cholesterol, but it can raise bad LDL cholesterol and as such should be consumed in moderation. The America Heart Association recommends eating only 13 grams of saturated fat every day. Butter contains many fatty acids that support brain development, as well, making it a good condiment for growing children.

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are popular low-carb diet options. These "brain foods" are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and contain plenty of antioxidants for optimal brain function. Almonds are 15% carbs, 72% fats, and 13% protein; while they may not be as low-carb as walnuts, one serving has only 9 grams of carbs, about half of which is fiber. Seeds, including hemp, chia, flax, and pumpkin, are all relatively low in carbs and high in healthy fats and protein, as well. Best of all, they're an easy grab-and-go pick for snacks.

Oil

All oils are carb-free, but the healthiest are unrefined or cold-pressed, including extra-virgin olive, coconut, and avocado oils. Olive oil is loaded with antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and anti-cancer compounds and is proven to be particularly supportive of heart health, helping fend off strokes and heart attacks.

Low-Carb vegetables

Some vegetables are high in carbs, and some are not. Low carb veggies include asparagus, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, spinach, green beans, lettuce, kale, and collard greens. Vegetables to avoid on a low-carb diet include the sweet or starchy ones such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, peas, corn, parsnips, and legumes.

Avocados

Avocados are a unique fruit because instead of being high in carbs, like most of their kind, they are full of healthy fats. They have a wide and varied nutritious profile and even contain more potassium than a banana. They're an excellent source of vitamins C, E, and K, as well as B-vitamins, folate, and many essential minerals.

Low-Carb Beverages

Watch out. There are a lot of carbs hiding in sugary drinks like soda and juice. If you're on a low-carb diet, try to steer clear of beverages with added sugar. People on this diet can opt for water, coffee, tea, and sparkling water.

Well, it's been well over a month since I started the low carb high fat diet and all I can say is – WOW! what a difference it has made.

Initially, I found eating in this new way of eating quite hard, and I was really exhausted. All I wanted to do was go to bed EVEN earlier every night. When I fully committed to the low carb high diet, or Ketogenic diet, I felt terrible for about a week or so.

And then something changed.

I felt amazing!

Not only did I have lots of energy of the kind I hadn't had since before reactive hypoglycemia entered my life but I could feel my blood sugar levels were a lot more stable. Now four weeks on, I almost feel like I don't have reactive hypoglycemia at all for pretty much the whole day. I still eat regularly, but the intervals are a lot more normal – like a normal person would eat – so three meals a day, with a couple of snacks in-between.

And that is all.

I fully put that down to the fact that HEALTHY fats help to stabilize blood sugar levels. So before you get excited, this doesn't mean that you can start eating all sorts of unhealthy snacks. Look our for a forthcoming post on what I eat in a day, so you can get an idea of the sort of things you should be eating on a LCHF diet to manage reactive hypoglycemia. But remember, I am not a medical health professional or an expert, I'm just sharing my experiences with you 🙂

So there have only been two times I have experienced my reactive hypoglycemia symptoms again and I realised it was the two times I had eaten too much protein in one sitting. The LCHF diet requires that you eat a moderate amount of protein. A lot of people actually get this wrong and eat too much protein. On two occasion, I was out to eat and ate wayyyy to much protein in one sitting and felt very ill for the rest of the day. It hit me hard. Why? Because the liver has the ability to convert the amino acids that are found in protein into sugar! This process is called gluconeogenesis. An excess amount of protein can be turned into sugar and we all know what that means with reactive hypoglycemia. BIG UH OH.

I'll be back again soon with that post I promised you about what I eat in the day. I have an appointment with a dietitian coming up to discuss what I have been doing, and also a discovery call with a functional medicine practitioner, so I hope to have some more insights to share with you from those. During pregnancy, you're already adjusting to multiple changes with your body, and a diagnosis of gestational diabetes can feel overwhelming. Take heart that not only will you be able to sustain a healthy pregnancy but you'll also be able to do it without following a strict meal plan. Keep reading to learn what causes gestational diabetes, how to eat healthy with gestational diabetes and how to create an easy-to-follow diabetes meal plan guide. The goal is to implement sustainable habits that feel manageable and stress-free but still help keep your blood sugars in a healthy range during this exciting time.

What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women, even if they didn't have diabetes before pregnancy. It's routine for doctors to test for it between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy. Any woman can get gestational diabetes; however, you may be at increased risk if you are overweight, have had gestational diabetes before or have relatives with diabetes. And, having gestational diabetes during pregnancy doesn't necessarily mean a diagnosis of diabetes after giving birth.

Like other forms of diabetes, gestational diabetes impacts how your cells use glucose. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose in your bloodstream. Insulin is then released from the pancreas to take glucose to your cells for energy. Hormonal shifts during pregnancy can cause insulin resistance, meaning glucose levels stay high in your blood instead of being taken to your cells for energy. The risks of gestational diabetes can include complications for mom and baby, such as a larger baby, which can increase the risk of needing a cesarean section. Uncontrolled blood sugar can also lead to high blood pressure in the mother.

The good news is that you can keep your blood sugar levels in check through proper nutrition, physical activity and working closely with your doctor to coordinate prenatal care.

Gestational Diabetes Symptoms

Some women may notice gestational diabetes symptoms before being tested by their doctor. Some of the typical symptoms include increased thirst and urination, blurred vision, and fatigue (which can be masked by normal pregnancy fatigue). However, most women will experience no symptoms at all, which is why it's important to go to all of your prenatal appointments.

How to Prevent Gestational Diabetes

There are a few things you can do to help reduce your risk of developing gestational diabetes, but it's important to remember that if you do get diagnosed, it's not your fault. If you are overweight or obese, you can lower your risk of gestational diabetes by making dietary changes that keep your blood sugar levels normal and help you gain less weight throughout pregnancy (you still want to gain weight when you're pregnant). But for women who are at a healthy weight before pregnancy (BMI 18.5-24.9), dietary changes haven't been shown to prevent gestational diabetes. Exercising from the start of pregnancy may lower your risk of gestational diabetes.

I have been looking on the FAQ of a lot of reddit sites like r/bodyweightfitness and I can only find one or two variations of a 1800 calorie 3 meal daily diet. Does anyone know enough 1800 calorie meal choices so that I don't have to eat the same thing every day? If I can find a good amount of different meals that all equal 1800 calories throughout the course of the day, that would make it so much easier to commit to it.

Why do you need a specific 1800 kcal diet plan? Why not just adjust your portion sizes to fit your calorie goal?

You make a fair point, but most of the food I have is processed food that I probably shouldn't be eating. My thinking is that by knowing which foods will help me achieve calorie goals, I will be able to lose weight and eat healthier

I wish the site worked this well for me. For some reason I get these horrible combinations and I have to play with it too damn much and basically planning my entire meal plan myself again, which I was paying the site to do.

I've been on an 1800 calorie diet for just over 90 days now, I've found it to be much easier to only eat two meals a day. I've done intermittent fasting in the past so skipping breakfast was pretty easy for me but I can understand a desire for 3 meals. My problem was the portion size never left me full so psychologically I really felt the diet. The counter argument that starting a diet is more painful in the beginning would be understandable but I didn't have this problem previously doing IF.

No primeiro mês é aconselhável ingerir uma alimentação com saladas, carnes e ovos. Outra, alternativa é reduzir aos poucos a ingestão de carboidratos. Elimine o açúcar e a farinha primeiro, mantendo arroz, feijão, lentilha, batata doce, cenoura, beterraba e aipim. Quando se sentir adaptado corte o arroz e o feijão e depois as batatas. Priorizando frango, peixe, ovos, azeite de oliva, óleo de coco, abacate, castanhas e nozes, além de água com ou sem gás, chás quentes ou frios e café. Lembre-se que frutas e vegetais também contem carboidratos. A quantidade de carboidratos consumidos depende do seu objetivo. Se precisar perder menos do que 10 kg pode consumir 35 gramas e se for mais do que 10 kg o ideal seria de 20 gramas por dia. Em media o sexo masculino perde nas duas primeiras semanas até 5 kg e as mulheres 3 kg comendo 20 gramas de carboidratos por dia.
